Sorry all you international folks who don’t understand Finnish, but since now, I’m going to write this blog in Finnish. Maybe some day I’ll switch back to English! You can still check out my photos here ;)

About a week ago Riku Kylä, a friend of mine, asked if I would like to shoot his car, Toyota Celica. First I was bit suspicious about the whole idea, since I hadn’t photographed cars before. But after all I decided to give it a try. Riku is also photographer, and you can find some of his work here.
We got an idea to take the photos in the basement of a local grocery store. We went there about an hour before they closed, hoping that there would be as few people as possible, and we could do our job undisturbed.
For the gear we had 5D mark II, 17-40L lens and a Sigma flash with a small softbox. We tried several compositions before this one, but none of them worked out that well. By moving the car bit, changing the shooting angle and the focal point, we ended up with this. The final images were shot at 35mm and f7.1.
These are the four images which I ended up using for the final product:

The main edit was done in Photoshop. The background is from the first image, the car is built from the first two, and the lights in the roof and the car are from the two darker images. Then I played a bit with the lights and shadows, as well as the colors. I also thought putting a slogan next to the car, but decided to leave it out after all.I wanted to give the photo a commercial look, and I think the outcome ain’t bad! At least if you consider that it was the first time I did something like this. And also it was definitely the biggest and longest photoshop project I’ve ever done. The editing lasted about 7 hours!
Few tips for those who want to try something like this:- WASH THE CAR JUST BEFORE THE SHOOTING! - Before setting up your tripod (you should definitely use one!), walk some time around the car and the location where you are shooting. If you put your camera on the tripod first in the beginning, it’s harder to you find the perfect composition.- Take one or two darker images of the car lights.- I think car photos can be really boring, so be creative, and create something eye catching. That is why I applied some more red elements in the final product.
Thanks for reading this post, I hope you enjoyed it ;)Make sure you follow me also in Facebook, 500px and Flickr. If you have anything in your mind, you can drop a comment down below or contact me in Facebook!

Long time since I wrote here last time.. But now I’m inspired to tell you about a photo shooting I did together with Lauri Laukkanen (www.laurilaukkanen.com) last weekend. Not all of you know, but I do sometimes fire breathing. I learned it from a friend in scouts few years ago. And now me and my friend Lauri got an idea, greatly inspired by Benjamin Von Wong to shoot photos of me doing it. Lauri is working with photography site SLR-Lounge (http://www.slrlounge.com/bts-inferno-tuesdays-with-lauri) and he is going to make few articles also there about this.

The location where we shot the photos, is an abandoned brick factory. It was perfectly far away from other people, so we could shoot undisturbed, and also quite safe place to breath fire. And even though it was freezing cold that night, I managed to do some pretty impressive flames. Riku Kylä was also there to shoot some behind the scenes video, which was really nice.

Straight after selling my Canon 7D on monday I got inspired to do an iPhone studio shooting test. I’ve been experimenting Instagram and iPhone shooting for a while now, so why not to take deeper look at it.
I built this small studio in my messy room, which certainly didn’t take too long: I put my great-grandmother’s worldmap on the wall, placed an old wooden table on my bed and put my brother’s sailboat (made by my grandfather) on it. To light up the boat I used one desk lamp and some kind of wake-up lamp on the top of my bookshelf. Finally I attached my iPhone to a tripod with blue-tack. Not being sure whether the blue-tack is strong enough, I put some pillows under my iPhone, just in case. My first intention was to take an Instagram photo of the boat, but after seeing the results I realized I could do so much more. With Instagram one can apply some pretty neat retro filters on a photo. On the downside is the loss of some resolution when exporting the photo. Also many consider Instagraming kind of cheating hence one doesn’t do much itself for the outcome, and I partly agree with that. As far as I’m concerned, Instagram shots shouldn’t be compared too much with so called “normal” shots that are created by someone entirely from the beginning to the end without automated editing presets.
Therefore I took the original photo to Lightroom and tried to edit it to have the similar kind of look that the Instagram photo had. After all it turned out that the result I got with Lightroom was way better than the Instagram, plus I did it myself. All in all it’s really hard to say what kind of camera the the photo is taken with.

The original photo straight from my iPhone 4:

What did we learn from this?  Equipment doesn’t make the photograph - it is the photographer and the way one uses it. Nowadays, when one can take decent quality photos even with a mobile phone, it is no use to blame the gear one has. And as the legendary quote says, the best camera is the one you’ve got in you neck.
While editing the photo, I remembered a similar experiment done by Lee Morris, who did a full fashion photo shoot using an iPhone. You can read his thought on this and check his behind the scenes video on Fstoppers.com.

Check out also this cool story of photographer named Kim A. Thomas shooting weddings with iPhone.
